Mangrovification: Outpost/Hut

Project Title:        Mangrovification
Building Type:    Hut/Outpost
Site/Location:     Pulau Ubin

Country:                 Singapore

Design Intent

Looking to an inherent natural solution to solve the soil erosion problem happening at the northern coast, we found the              mangrove system.

Its roots anchor down the soil and retains them while serving as a breakwater to shield the coast from the onslaught of harsh waves caused by boats crossing the Nenas channel. The density of roots also provide an opportunity to trap litter around for ease of disposal.

The design of the hut mimics that of the mangrove. This solution is Mangrovification. The foundation roots take form to cater to people of all wants and needs. The elderly will be able to stroll through it comfortably, while playful kids can explore and climb up the structure. When low tide, the boardwalk access is visible and a means to reach the far out Hut. When high tide, the Hut itself becomes an island, and access to it is limited to swimming across the water.
