We live in a fast paced 21st century surrounded with technology and information. Perhaps it will do us good to slow things down and escape from all this…
Project Title: Digital Detoxification
Building Type: Slow food café@NUS
Site/Location: National University of Singapore
Country: Singapore
Design Intent
The site is situated in the Lover’s Park of NUS, an ideal location for students to get away from the hectic school life. The Slow food cafe@NUS taps on this context and aims at cultivating a technology-free lifestyle not only through it architecture but as well as its functions. Formally, the design takes that of a saucer. This umbrella provides shade and allows cooling on the lower, dinning and food preparation level through the Venturi effect. On the roof level, where is community salad garden, the convex shape of the building allows ease of drainage of excess water and also encourages verbal communication through visual connectivity and verbal connectivity (echoes). The height and location is such as to deny views to the outside, creating for the students an oasis in the desert.
